Concept Art Study Plan
Concept Art Study Plan
Building toward character/creature concept art (see Invictus Reference Links), combined with the ongoing How to Draw (Scott Robertson) fundamentals track.
Weekly Schedule
Monday
- How to Draw chapter work (perspective/construction) — 45-60 min
Tuesday
- Daily animal/figure construction gesture drawing (Croquis Cafe / Line of Action) — 30-45 min
- Form library sketchbook: break down 2-3 objects (animals, armor, weapons, architecture) into primitives
Wednesday
- How to Draw chapter work — 45-60 min
- Thumbnail exploration session: 20-30 tiny silhouette thumbnails (creature or character ideas)
Thursday
- Daily animal/figure construction gesture drawing — 30-45 min
- Weekly ref artist study (rotate through Invictus Reference Links — Tooth, itsiansu, anhe1, etc.): 1-hour breakdown of silhouette/shape language/anatomy exaggeration
Friday
- How to Draw chapter work — 45-60 min
- Form library sketchbook: 2-3 more objects
Saturday
- Thumbnail exploration session #2: 20-30 more thumbnails
- Pick a favorite from the week's thumbnails to carry into the monthly final piece
Sunday
- Rest or light sketchbook/flexible catch-up day
Monthly
- Take the strongest thumbnail from the month and push it through full construction → value study → limited-palette color render.
- Once construction feels solid, start layering in dedicated value/color & light study on top.
Notes
- H2D fundamentals stay the spine of the plan (perspective, ellipses, form construction).
- Ref study and thumbnails train design/idea generation separately from rendering skill — both need to happen weekly, not just at the end.
- The monthly final piece is where fundamentals + design practice actually merge into portfolio-ready work.
